Pilates
What is Pilates?
Pilates is a form of exercise, developed by Joseph Pilates, which emphasizes the balanced development of the body through core strength, flexibility, and awareness in order to support efficient, graceful movement.
The focus of Pilates is correct movement, quality not quantity, core stabilisation and postural correction. One of the main benefits of Pilates, from a Physiotherapist’s perspective, is that the technique can be successful in correcting muscle imbalances. These imbalances are caused by us overusing certain muscles whilst others are neglected and become weak.

Pilates will help you to understand where these muscle imbalances are developing and how you can correct them. Pilates is suitable for most men and women, from nine to 90, and beyond. It is particularly suitable for those who suffer…
• Back Pain, backache and other back problems
• Poor Posture and rounded shoulders
• Neck and shoulder pains or problems
• Stiffness, joint pains and muscle pain
• Injuries and for improvement to sports performance

Pilates at Physio Plus is delivered by an experienced Chartered Physiotherapist who has an in-depth understanding of musculoskeletal problems and injury management.
1:1 Pilates Sessions
It is recommended that you attend an introductory session to Pilates in order that you achieve the most out of the classes. This 45 minute session will give you an opportunity to explore how the Pilates method can specifically benefit you, discuss your medical history and any injuries or pain that you may have had and practice some of the Pilates moves.

Pilates Classes
Beginners and more advanced classes are run in six week blocks. The classes will allow you to progress your exercises when you are ready under the regular guidance of a Physiotherapist.
Throughout each session your technique will be checked with each exercise and you will be reminded of the main teaching points of each exercise. If your technique is wrong you will be corrected and if the Physiotherapist feels that you need to focus on a particular movement to see clinical benefit then you will be advised accordingly.
