A Note from Helen
September always feels a little like a fresh start. Holidays are coming to an end, routines return, clubs and classes start back up, and many of us begin thinking about what we'd like to achieve over the next few months. And there’s certainly been plenty to celebrate at Physio Plus recently!
We’re incredibly proud of our patient Megan, who completed the Lakeland 50 ultramarathon after working with Julie to overcome a few injury problems. It’s a fantastic achievement and a great reminder that, with the right preparation and support, our bodies are capable of more than we sometimes think.
We’ve also had some very special news within the Physio Plus team recently …. a very different kind of new beginning to celebrate. Read more about it below! Of course, being active doesn’t have to mean completing a 50-mile ultramarathon!
For one person, it might mean crossing the Great North Run finish line this weekend. For another, it’s being able to walk the dog without knee pain, get back on the golf course, enjoy a weekend walk or simply keep up with the grandchildren.
hatever your goal this September, our aim is to help you keep doing — or get back to doing — the things that matter to you.Helen Reed Clinic Owner & Chartered Physiotherapist
From Injury to Lakeland 50
We're incredibly proud of our patient Megan, who recently completed the Lakeland 50 ultramarathon — a challenging 50-mile route through the stunning Lake District. Getting to the start line wasn't straightforward.
Megan had been dealing with a persistent combination of hamstring tendon, quad and knee problems, while also trying to manage a busy race calendar. She worked with Julie on a structured strengthening programme alongside treatment to help settle her symptoms and prepare her body for the demands of the race.
Megan admits she was nervous in the build-up: “I was worried that my hamstring tendons would flare, and that my knees wouldn’t be able to handle the long, technical descent.” Julie’s support made a huge difference, both physically and mentally. As well as putting together a programme for Megan to follow between sessions, Julie helped manage her symptoms around training and races.
“She was so encouraging and affirming and supportive that when I left the session, I had a renewed sense of confidence that one way or another, I would make it to the finish line.”
Megan went into the race simply hoping to finish, expecting that 18–20 hours would be an incredible achievement. Instead, she crossed the line in just over 15½ hours — inside the 16-hour qualifying time for the Lakeland 100! A fantastic achievement and a brilliant example of what can happen with the right preparation, support and confidence.
Megan summed up her experience perfectly: “Thank you, Julie, for working so hard to get me to that start line, and to the finish much faster than I thought possible.” And her next challenge? “Bring on the 100!”
Great North Run: Nearly There!
With the Great North Run this Sunday, the hard work is done - now is not the time to squeeze in extra miles!

And afterwards ….if your legs could do with a little extra TLC, we're offering 10% off Sports Massage for Great North Run runners until 26th September. Book here So once the medal is around your neck and the legs have reminded you exactly how far 13.1 miles is …. we’ve got you covered. Good luck to everyone running on Sunday - we’ll be cheering you on!
Not a Runner? Your Goal Matters Just as Much
You don't need a race number to have a reason to get moving. Maybe you've been avoiding longer walks because your knee becomes sore. Perhaps your shoulder has been niggling all summer, making gardening difficult, or your back has stopped you enjoying your usual golf game. These things can gradually become "something you just put up with"
September is a great time to do something about it. Rather than changing how you live around a problem, we'd much rather help you understand what's causing it and give you the tools to get back to doing the things you enjoy. Get Ready for Autumn!
Autumn is one of the best times of year to get outside. Whether you're heading out for longer walks, exploring the countryside or simply trying to stay active as the evenings get darker, having strong and confident legs can make all the difference. If your knees are already feeling stiff or sore, don't wait until a problem starts limiting your activity. A little preparation now can help you enjoy those autumn walks with more confidence.
